Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world. Men are about 100 times less likely to develop breast cancer than women. Women are more likely to get breast cancer after the menopause.
The first and most common symptom of breast cancer is usually a lump in the breast tissue, armpit or collarbone. It is important to know that, as with most forms of cancer, earlier diagnosis significantly increases chances of recovery. Therefore, women are encouraged to be aware of what the normal state of their breasts is, undergo mammograms regularly and examine their own breasts for abnormalities, lumps or changes. These include changes in the size of shape of the breast, a rash around the nipple or unusual discharge from one of the nipples. In most cases, pain does not indicate breast cancer.
The risk to develop breast cancer increases with age. Moreover, it is more likely to occur if there have been cases of it in the family history. Other risk factors include increased levels of hormones oestrogen and testosterone, starting periods early in life, late menopause, not having children or having them later in life, dense tissue in the breast, excessive alcohol consumption, being tall, exposure to radiation and treatment of Hodgkin‘s lymphoma.
If you develop breast cancer your consultant will decide a treatment plan with you that may involve drugs, chemotherapy and removal of all or part of the breast. Following this surgery or sometimes at the same time they can perform cosmetic surgery for reconstruction of the breast using breast implants
