Colon Cancer

Colon cancer, also referred to as colorectal cancer is the formation of a malignant growth in the colon or rectum. The colon is a long, hollow part of the digestive tract where the waste from the digestion process is kept. The rectum is a part of the colon located next to the anus. Cancer of the colon and rectum is very frequent, especially in the Western world. Experts believe there is a link between the diet available in the Western countries and colon cancer, since it is relatively rare in Africa and Asia and very common in Europe as well as North America.

Some factors increase an individual‘s chance to develop colorectal cancer. These include a diet low in fibre and high in fat, cases of colon cancer in the family history and appearance of benign polyps in the large intestine. Experts claim that in the process of breaking down fat, certain chemicals called carcinogens are produced that are responsible for the formation of cancer. Therefore, eating a diet full of vegetables and other low-fat foods as well as increasing one‘s fibre intake by eating whole-grain bread, grain products and cereals may reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
