Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Hodgkin‘s lymphoma, also called Hodgkin‘s disease, is a type of cancer that originates in the white blood cells, called lymphocytes. Thomas Hodgkin, a British physician and pathologist, first described this condition. When diagnosed in early stages, Hodgkin‘s lymphoma is one of the most curable forms of cancer. Even when it is discovered in later stages, it is still very likely to be cured.

The following symptoms may be signs of Hodgkin‘s lymphoma: sweating, fever, back pain, especially when it is difficult to locate, enlargement of the liver and the spleen as well as swelling of lymphatic glands, weight loss, itches and rashes.

Hodgkin‘s lymphoma is currently impossible to prevent. Causes of the condition are still being investigated. However, experts agree that men seem to be more at risk than women. Other risks include age (15 to 40 and older than 55 are the groups of increased risk), genetic factors (cases in the family history increase chances of getting Hodgkin‘s lymphoma), Epstein-Barr virus or infectious mononucleosis (abnormal levels of monocytes in the body), impaired immune system and longer exposure to human growth hormone.
