Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a form of cancer that develops in the lymphocytes (cells of the immune system, also commonly known as white blood cells). Cancerous tumours often form in the lymphatic glands, in which case an enlargement in the lymph nodes occurs. There is a close link between lymphomas and lymphoid leukaemia’s, but the latter ones do not produce tumours. There are many different types of lymphomas. Some of them may be virtually harmless and the patient can live a normal life even without being treated and some of them rapidly destroy healthy tissues and lead to severe illness and inevitable death. The main types of this cancer is Hodgkin‘s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin‘s lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin‘s lymphoma is closely linked to ageing, since the risk to develop this condition increases as the person gets older and most patients diagnosed with the cancer are older than 65. Other possible causes are infections such as Epstein-Barr virus, Helicobacter pylori, HIV and hepatitis B and C as well as medical conditions affecting the immune system, (HIV and autoimmune disease). Exposure to toxic materials, including herbicides, pesticides and black hair dye is also believed to increase the risk of developing lymphoma.
