Mouth Cancer

Mouth cancer is a general term for a wide variety of cancers that can develop in the lips or the oral cavity, including dental gums, the roof and the floor of the mouth, the inside of the lips and cheeks as well as the tongue. The floor of the mouth is the most likely area to develop mouth cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent type of mouth cancer. It means that the cancer starts in the cells of the lining of the mouth. Other rarer types of mouth cancer include cancer of the salivary glands, lymphoma and melanoma that can occur in the skin surrounding the mouth or lips.

Causes for developing mouth cancer are unknown, but tobacco smoke, excessive drinking, exposure to sunlight, poor diet and some forms of Human Papilloma Virus are thought to increase the chances of getting mouth cancer. Symptoms may include lumps, sores, red patches or ulcers in the mouth or on the lips that do not heal for a long time, a numb sensation in the mouth, unusual bleeding and a loose tooth without any apparent reason.
