Parathyroid Cancer

Parathyroid cancer is an extremely rare form of cancer that arises in the mutated cells of the parathyroid gland. The parathyroid gland is an organ located next to the thyroid gland in the lower part of the neck. It is responsible for the production of a specific hormone that helps the body to store and absorb calcium. Parathyroid cancer is not very aggressive, but there is a risk of the cancer reoccurring, even after many years.

The increased risk factors for parathyroid cancer include rare genetic conditions affecting the parathyroid gland, such as familial isolated hyperparathyroidism and multiple endocrine neoplasia. Moreover, this type of cancer is connected to extremely high levels of calcium in the patient‘s body.
The signs that could warn about the presence of parathyroid cancer are pain in the bones or the upper part of the back, lumps in the neck, weakness in the muscles, vomiting and difficulty producing speech. The chance of recovery is quite high if the cancer can be removed surgically, which means it is detected in early stages and has not spread to other internal organs.
