Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that originates when the cells in the prostate start developing abnormally and without control. The prostate is a male gland used to produce and store a bodily fluid which is used for the production of semen. Prostate cancer is a relatively common condition, but it is generally a slow growing form of cancer, especially in older patients.

The difficulty with the symptoms of prostate cancer is that a patient who has a benign tumour displays almost the same symptoms as a patient with malignant tumour. In both cases, the symptoms are caused by the tumour pressing on the urethra and blocking or impairing the urination process. The most common symptoms for prostate tumours include trouble holding urine, difficulty urinating or having to pass urine more frequently than normal, painful urination and blood in the urine as well as semen. Prostate cancer is also likely to spread to the bones, in which case it can cause pain in the bones of the back, hips or pelvis.

The risk factors for developing prostate cancer are thought to be age (this form of cancer is rare in men younger than 50) and genetic factors. It is suggested that having diabetes, taking drugs to control cholesterol levels, a healthy diet and aspiring may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
